Safety, Metrics and Benchmarks for Automated Driving

ABOUT

Automated driving is at the forefront of technological innovation, with advancements promising transformative changes in mobility. However, critical challenges remain—ensuring the safety of automated vehicles and establishing meaningful metrics to evaluate their performance. The following two workshops address these interconnected aspects, offering a comprehensive exploration of how to navigate the complexities of automated driving and drive progress in the field. Through this unified approach, we aim to foster a deeper understanding and interdisciplinary exchange on topics essential for advancing automated vehicle technology.

The morning session features Workshop 1: Ensuring and Validating Safety of Automated Vehicles, which addresses the pressing safety challenges associated with SAE-level-3+ automated vehicles. Despite the significant advances in automated driving, questions of safety remain paramount due to uncertainties in environment perception, behavior prediction, vehicle behavior generation, and system validation. This workshop will explore innovative approaches to safety-by-design, hazard analysis, and safety argumentation, among other critical topics, to help define and achieve acceptable safety levels in automated driving.

The afternoon will host Workshop 2: Metrics and Benchmarks in Automated Driving – Addressing the Crisis of Metrics, which delves into the challenges posed by deep neural networks (DNNs) in automated driving. While DNNs are transforming the driving stack and pushing benchmarks to new heights, they raise fundamental questions: Are we measuring the right things? Are these metrics driving meaningful improvements in safety and vehicle performance? This workshop invites both academic and industrial perspectives to discuss the design, application, and integration of metrics in automated driving, with a focus on overcoming current limitations and shaping future benchmarks.

Between these sessions, we invite you to a communal lunch and joint poster session, offering an excellent opportunity to network, explore cutting-edge research, and engage in stimulating discussions about innovative projects in an informal setting.
